Boleslawiec, Poland has been the home of pottery artists and craftsmen for over seven centuries. Throughout that time, the pottery of Boleslawiec has been considered to be of unusually high quality, and is easily distinguished from other products.
The oldest extant pieces of Boleslawiec pottery date to the first half of the 16th century and bear distinctive features of Renaissance style. The technique of decorating underneath the glaze began during the Baroque period. The first decorations represented branches, flowers, birds, and religious motifs. These designs were applied by hand with special “punches” or stamps before the pottery was glazed. Often, members of the royalty such as Frederick the Great of Prussia had special pottery made with their crown and initials. By the 19th century, there were ceramics workshops producing pottery in Boleslawiec. Although changes in taste required development of new designs, the “punch”, or hand-stamping technique remained the basis for decorating the pottery.
As Boleslawiec pottery (known as Bunzlauer pottery in German) became famous, the town became the center of ceramic production in Central Europe. It was considered as refined and beautiful as fine china, but far more durable and practical. In 1844, stoneware from a Boleslawiec workshop was awarded the top prize at a prestigious London exhibition, and the pottery became even more highly prized in European markets.
Zaklady Ceramiczne Boleslawiec is heir to the centuries’ long tradition of local potters. The city of Boleslawiec has granted this company the exclusive right to use the name of the city as the name of the company. The company works to maintain tradition, while continuing to foster creativity in its designers.
The pottery is still handmade and manually decorated by the Bunzlauer punch technique. The quality continues in the tradition of the old masters of pottery. Each piece is fashioned as a singular work of art and retains the charm of old masterpieces.
Since it is fired at a temperature of over 2000 degrees, Boleslawiec pottery is safe for use in ovens, microwaves, dishwashers and freezers. The pottery should be brought to room temperature before exposure to heat. It is not intended for use directly on a burner, or under the broiler.
